Gingerbread Lighthouse

This year Jack suggested we build a Gingerbread Lighthouse so that's what we did.
It only took a double batch of gingerbread (and 8lbs of powdered sugar).

Cora helped as long as I gave her enough gingerbread scraps to keep her happy.

Backyard Tight Rope Walking

We finally setup the slack line Mom gave us for Christmas in the backyard. We had to set a pretty big (and ugly, Emily pointed out) wood post in concrete for it to work since we don't have enough trees. It's pretty tough unless you cheat with a top rope to hang on to, so that's what we did. Jack and his buddies love it. I'm thinking about adding a zip line to the setup, but hopefully we'll get our yard back periodically.

We spent the night in the woods at Carol and Grant's in our new huge tent. The night went great for Jack and Cora. Emily and I didn't sleep as well but we enjoyed the noise coyete yapping in the night. It almost sounded like a roudy party and not wild animals.
This morning we had a nice strawberry short cake breakfast and are now relaxing after a hot tub.

Cora is starting to eat (semi) solids and feed herself a little. She loves mashed up melon in this food net sack thing to suck on while we have dinner together. She also loves the rice cereal we feed her.

Today was the big Rose Parade and we met up with Emily's dad and the Zucker's at our favorite spot on the east side of the Burnside bridge where there is plenty of room for Jack and the other kids to run around and occasionally check out the parade.

Emily has been taking guitar lessons for 8 weeks and had her first performance in the park last weekend. She did great and is looking forward to continuing her lessons. We all cheered her on between eating all the potluck sweets and watching a nearby bike polo match.

We went to a New Years day party at a friends house and they took some professional pictures of us. Jack's picture smile is a little forced so the best way to get a good picture is to not have him smile on purpose. Kind of tough to do.

This year's gingerbread house is a train roundhouse and rail yard with working turn table. Jack came up with the idea and he helped do all the track layout and decoration with his buddy Elliot.

July 4th Kids Parade

Like the last couple of years Jack and his buddies Charlie and Elliot rode their "bikes" in the kids parade in the neighborhood. The parade follows a fire truck 2 twice around the block and ends at a full neighborhood picnic with lots of Popsicles and hot dogs. Jack peddled his airplane "bike" all the way there (10 blocks or so) and then shared it with his friends.

Easter Egg Hunting!

Happy Easter everyone!
Jack has had a fever the last few days so we had to keep him out of the neighborhood easter egg hunt, but he was feeling good enough for a hunt of his own in the basement. After the first hunt Jack did it several more times. Sometime he would hide them for us to find, but had a hard time not telling us where they all were.

First egg is the easiest.

We did it!. This was a tough one this year. The wings gave us the most trouble. They kept breaking and dropping them on the floor once didn't help either. But it turned out pretty good in the end. We're going to try and hold off eating it until New Years day when we have some friends over.

Molalla Train Park!

On Sunday (today) we all drove down to Molalla to visit the Train Park. Pretty neat place. Everything was volunteer run and donation based. The mini steam trains were really cool. Jack and his buddy Elliot were in heaven.

Apple Festival

On Friday we went to the nearby Apple Tasting Festival at the Portland Nursery. Lots of free popcorn, cider and apple slices to taste. Also we bumped into Jack's buddy Henry and his sister Francy. Jack had a good time pretending to be a train and haul freight with Henry. Afterwards we grabbed lunch and then had a nice cupcake for dessert.

Jack and I stopped in at Tabor Commons to check the progress and found Paul (the project manager) working on the paver patio behind Tabor Commons. Good thing Jack was hauling his backhoe. So we got to work helping. Then we called Jack's buddy Elliot to come help too, along with his dad and later Emily and Elliot's mom we were able to finish it off before dinner time. It looks good. The project it coming along. we should be planting around the end of the month so stay tuned.

Backyard Rain Garden

Here are some pictures of the rain garden we built in the backyard. As part of the roof replacement, I had the whole back half of the roof drain to a down spout that discharges off of the end of the pergola that we had rebuilt earlier this summer. Emily found a great rain chain that slows the water down as it dumps into a raised channel that drains into the shallow rain garden pond. We planted a only about 6 plants within the pond along with some large stepping stones. Our hope is that there will be enough room for the plants to grow and still allow Jack and his friends room to step from rock to rock without killing the plants. We'll see how that works out.

June 10th was Sydney's 16th birthday. Emily made him his own burger. He bit into it with the candle still lit which ended up sticking out of his mouth. He didn't care. He's still pretty spritely for 16. He just seems to sleep more and take longer to get going, but still can wolf down people food.

Today Jack and I rode the bike with the trailer downtown to do some errands. One stop was the Multnomah County building which has a great roof top garaden with a great view of the city.

Then after visiting the city's permit center (work stuff) we stopped by the Lovejoy Fountain downtown. Jack loved pretending the sunscreen tube was a boat running the rapids.

Last weekend we rebuilt the old rotten pergola in our backyard. It really looks nice we think. Now we are resetting the flagstone pavers in a gravel bed beneath it. Stay tuned for that.

This weekend Jack and I finished building a toy backhoe(our of junk). We stole the concept from pictures of toy backhoes we found on the internet. It pivots on a bolt that can attach to the side of Jack's sand box or on the top of a plastic crate for mobile jobs. Jack loves it. At least after 2 days he does. Now he wants bulldozer trends on it.

This is a big thank you post for our family back East.

Merry Christmas everyone!
Today we built a giant snow man. Or rather it started out as a man but since it didn't look much like a man we made it into a snail. Then we did a little more sledding around the block with Elliot doing most of the pushing.
Then Santa came by driving a mail truck and gave Jack and Elliot candy canes.

Em has to work tomorrow so we did presents today. Grand-dad Phil came over and we open presents. After Jack opened all is presents we took him downstairs to see the extra secret present from Grandma Chris and PopPop. The super train table! Jack loved it but he kept trying to haul too many train cars at once and would have derailments. That made Jack a little frustrated.

We've got snow! We woke up to a frozen snowy morning. Sounds like we're in for about a week of below freezing temperatures. That doesn't happen very often here. We don't even have a sled so we built one from some old skis and our old recycling bin. Jack loved it.

Sunny November Bike Ride

On this Sunny Sunday we bike to Sellwood for something to do. In Sellwood we found some old train tracks and train cars. Then at lunch we ate next to an old caboose that was converted into a book store. Jack love climbing all over them. Also we stopped by a really neat intersection called Share-it Square that had a kids club house, benches and a book and stuff exchange.

Halloween Trick or Treating

Trick or Teating this year was lots of fun even though Jack and Charlie refused to wear their costumes. Jack was going to be a Monkey. Grandma Chris had made a great costume that we got him to wear a few times before but he would have none of it for trick or treating.

Elliot did much better since his costume was mostly Thomas the train clothes he had been wearing all day already. We did get Jack to at least wear a flanel shirt so we were saying his costume was a Lumber Jack. No one seemed to give 2 year olds a hard time about their lack of costume though.

These are pictures from a trip out to a farm called Old MacDonald's Farm. Maybe you've heard of him. We went with the Zuckers, Jack's buddy Noah. It was a really fun learning farm that let us roast marshmellows after lunch. Jack's favorite part by far was the hay tunnel. There were a few hole in the sides where parents could try and peek through and spot their kids. Jack and Noah must have been through it 30 times at least. Below are some pictures of me trying to catch glimpses of them running by.

Last weekend (Sept 27 & 28) we went camping with our neighbors the Harrison's at Oxbow Park. It's pretty close and the weather was pretty good. No rain but it did get a little cold at night. Jack and Elliot had a great time playing on a big stump at our campsite. We went on some nice hikes along the Sandy River and Jack even did his own hiking for the most part. It seemed to help that Jack was hiking with a little friend that kept him from wanting to be carried.

Vacation in Idaho - Part 2

Here are more pictures from our trip to Idaho. We went biking and hiking and explored a dark cave. Despite the lack of sun we had a great vacation and had lots of fun.

Vacation in Idaho - Part 1

For the first day of our vacation we drove to Idaho. I was a long 6 plus hour drive so we made sure to stop at a couple of playgrounds along the way to stretch our legs and burn a little toddler energy. We made it to our camp site across from the Sliverwood Amusement Park at about 7:30pm and setup the tent. This was Jack's first camp out. We weren't exactly roughing it with our air matress and camp showers but it was about the roughest we want to get at least with a toddler. Jack eventually got over the fun of the tent and jumping on Mom and Dad and fell asleep around 9:00. Despite it getting pretty cold that night (maybe around mid-40's) Jack slept great. He never felt cold to the touch, while Em and I couldn't be warm enough. Day 2 - After packing up the tent and a big greasy breakfast nearby we headed over to Silverwood Amusement Park. It's supposed to be the biggest one in the NW or something like that. Not a great day, overcast, but also being a Monday meant we never had to wait in any lines. Jack loved the merry-go-round. We rode it 3 times. He loved a lot of other rides too, we took lots of pictures. They have a actual antique 1915 narrow gauge steam train that Jack was crazy about. We rode it's couple mile loop in the afternoon. Em and I took turns riding one of the big rollercoasters as one of the last things rides for the day. We finished with a magic show and some pizza and then went back to the car. A short drive from there brought us to Harrison ID, where we met up with Carol and Grant. They rented a nice 2 bedroom condo on the shores of Coeur d'Alene Lake. After getting settled, Jack and I went for a swim in the pool while Em and Carol took pictures and relaxed. More adventures to come.

Basement Remodel Update- Play closet nearly complete

One of the last parts of the basement remodel to be finished is the "play closet". Below are some pictures of it at it current state and I'm giving it a test run. Pretty tight fit for me, but Jack should have no problem. The plan is to be done with all inside work this week so stay tuned.

All 4 shelves are in and the face boards are on.

Dozer Day

On Saturday the the 17th we went to Dozer Day (as in Bulldozer) with our friends Adam and his kids Noah and Anya. It was pretty fun, but it was really hot and Jack does not like to wait in lines. Below are some pictures from the event.

I had a very nice birthday on Friday. The weather was great and Em didn't have to work in the moring so we all biked up to Mt Tabor Park for some playground fun and then a picnic.

Basement Remodel Update - Play Closet Mockup

So the basement remodel progesses. Hopefully we're only 2 weeks away from completion. Attached are the string line mockups of the "play closet". The taped squares are where the holes in the wall will be and the strings represent the shelves to be built. There are 4 shelves of various sizes and shapes that should allow Jack and hopefully some flexible adults to crawl from the bottom to the top, peaking out of the holes as they climb.

It should be completed and painting at least started this coming week. Stay tuned...

Hi all,
Just a few pictures of Jack riding his tricycle that Matt and Amanda got him for Chistmas. It one of his favorites.
He doesn't even mind that we make him wear his helmet. He likes to take it off roading, so we're better safe than sorry.
